Modern Artist Challenge...

I have chosen two modern "artists" as having an influence on my photography. And, it will be no surprise that whomever I chose had to have careers steeped in realism. I selected a photographer and a painter.

The photographer is the renown black & white portrait photographer Yosuf Karsh. His influence on my work was certainly unintentional, but from that day years ago when I first saw his iconic portraits of Winston Churchill and Ernest Hemingway, I have been a fan.

I am captivated by his strong lighting and those deep, rich, dark tones in his prints--qualities I try to include in many of my candid portraits.

The painter I've chosen as an influencer is Andrew Wyeth. Again, his influence was unintentional, but his life's work covers such a broad spectrum of style and subject matter, I think most any photographer could connect to several aspects of his work.

His talents that resonate with me include his extensive use of buildings, or parts of buildings, windows and doors; weathered exteriors and paint; texture; the untamed sea; boats; wildflowers and unkempt landscapes; minimalism, etc.
