For Comment: February 2023

For Comment: Color or Black and White?

I love monochrome images.  I usually shoot in black and white and then see what the image wants to do when I edit the Raw file.  I was thinking the other day that I have Al Wood to thank for this shot, he had posted this beautiful photo from this same location (Tower Park), and that it would be fun to post to this group since now Al and I are joining. Due to all the shadows and detail, I thought this was a difficult image to edit and still not sure that I'm happy with it, so I thought I would post for comment and get ideas on how to make it better. (maybe a future rework!).  Anyway, thank you, Al, for finding this beautiful peaceful scene - I needed it that day.

Rework - Canon Beach

Our emails yesterday regarding Sam Abell made me think of this image.  Re-work from 2016 trip to Oregon. This was selected by Sam Abell for the online exhibit at Photoplace Gallery in 2017 for "The Decisive Moment".  I love Sam Abell's work and have a couple of his books.

For Comment

I thought Imaging USA 2023 was a big improvement over the last time.  Lots more vendors, although some of the big name camera manufactures were not there.  For those who like to take pics of models and people, it was a lot better this year.

Rework: Faux Forest - Brussels 2008

In 2008 we took a trip to Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. This scene was found in Brussels when we took a wrong turn.

For Comment - "Meg's Race" .... not my image

I mentioned at the meeting that Meg had just finished a 100 K race (62 miles).  Apparently the race officials had photographers scattered over the course to take pictures of the runners.  This is one they posted on their website of Meg and gives an idea of the terrain facing the runners.  I liked the mood of the image.... wish I had taken it.

JAN 2023 - Passino, Rework

Lots of angles to this - editing a photo to fit into a project or call for entry (even if earlier edits still fine for other purposes), revisiting previous edits to try new approaches (more to my current preferences) discovering previously overlooked photos, etc.

EXAMPLE 1 - Transforming photo to fit into a project

First Edit -Focus on Funky Tree / Quarantine Funk

Recent Edit - For a Blue Hour triptych

The BH triptych

Passino, For Comment

From the top of the Green Hills Mall parking garage, playing with the Fujifilm presets "toy camera" and "high contrast" (among others), to create some dreamlike scenes.

This was surprisingly satisfying! Not that I want to make a habit of this, but then again - - why not? Fun to get out of usual mode of shooting.

Very little post processing other than bringing up shadows for some, and trying to counteract the toy camera's way-too-dramatic vignette.
