Before / After Assignment

I have not been out shooting much in the last month, and have mostly been editing images for a workshop I participated in. I've been trying to pull together a series from images made over the last few years. So here's a few before / after that I've edited recently.  The color images are straight from camera, the BW are edited. I use texture overlays in most of these as well as a 'platinum' color tone on the black and white.

  1. I assumed the purpose of this exercise was just to show a before and after version of an image and not to provide critiques. Nevertheless, since the ice has been broken I have a few comments about the first image. I generally like having a bunch of stuff in an image to look at and I don't like the often used recommendation to change something because it draws your eye away from the main subject but in this image I have to force my eyes to look down at the spider web. Nevertheless, after looking at it and considering removing the web that goes across the upper part of the frame and cropping down from the top some I am sure what can be done to correct this issue without reducing the overall esthetic of the image.

  2. Hi Al - Thanks for your feedback! I struggled with the cropping of this image, and thought about taking more off the top of the image (maybe a 4x5 crop), but here's how I decided on the overall frame of the image: the spider web, in the lower right 'rule of thirds' interest point, the framing on the sides of the foliage/flowers and the upper line of the spider web in the back made the 'circle' of the image. I didn't want the spider web in the middle given the overall other items. I was hoping to lead the viewer's eye through the frame and settle on the spider web.
