My favorite native plant is the common milkweed. There are several reasons. First of all, it's the host plant for the Monarch caterpillar and butterfly and vital to sustaining that species. The caterpillar feeds on the milkweed plant and ingests the toxins, which in turn makes the Monarch unpalatable and poisonous to its predators.
Secondly, I enjoy walking in a meadow in the Fall when the milkweed pods dry out and pop open releasing hundreds of seeds, each with its own little parachute to ride the wind to a location to start a new plant.
There are many interesting facets worth knowing about the legend and lore of the milkweed plant. I encourage you to search those out.
Here are a few Fall images from my file of milkweed plants.
